Synthesis and orientation of fully aromatic polyimids via CVD polymerization and lyotropic precursor polymers

Project description:

Poly(amic ethyl ester)s, PAE, are used as precursors systems for polyimides. PAEs have improved solubilities, better resistance to hydrolytic degradation, yield high molecular weight products but suffer from higher and broader imidization temperatures. PAEs with para linkages exhibit lyotropic behavior of soluble, rigid-rod polyaramides. To elucidate systematically the structure-property relationships of lyotropic PAE systems, a series of new rod-like para linked PAEs was synthesized and characterized. All synthesized para-PAEs are completely soluble in NMP without the addition of inorganic salts such as LiCl. All PAEs turned opaque above 30 wt% in NMP and exhibited liquid crystalline behavior with a typical schlieren texture. Most systems for thermoreversible gels which have been further characterized by X-ray diffraction, FT-IR and SEM. The SEM micrograph at the left shows a typical morphology of the gel which is not observed in the meta analogue. Fiber spinning of the lyotropic solution and orientation behavior are currently under investigation.

The SEM micrograph above shows the wormlike morphology of a para-linked poly(amic ethyl)ester which was obtained from lyotropic solutions.
