This computer controlled machine is a custom made type called 'Meltflixer' which combines a standard melt indexer for measuring the melt volume index (MVI) and a capillar spinner with limited rheomter functions (RheoFlixer). For the melt index mode the plunger is driven by weights and a automatic measuring unit determines the time for a volume extrusion. In the rheometer mode the plunger is driven by a motor and corresponding forces during the experiment are recorded by a load cell. By a special software option the plunger speed can be adjusted online. Special attachements were designed here for fiber and film spinning.
LCP fibers have been spun with amounts as low as 0.5 g.
